Mangareva is a Polynesian island in the Gambier group. It was ruled as a monarchy until France annexed it on February 21, 1881. While other Gambier Islands had rulers, Mangareva’s kings were the highest-ranking. The island’s rulers and chiefs were called ʻakariki, from the togoʻiti class. Like many Polynesian genealogies, Mangareva’s line begins with the gods or deified ancestors. Because King Joseph Gregorio II was a minor, he ruled together with his mother, Queen Maria Eutokia Toaputeitou, and his uncle Elia Teoa. In 1868, Joseph Gregorio II died without children, so a regency was set up until a male heir could be born to Agnès or Philomèle, the two surviving daughters of Maputeoa. The royal family tree of Mangareva is noted below. Bernardo Putairi was not related to the royal line; he was the guardian and tutor of Maputeoa’s two daughters. Arone and Elia were considered brothers of Maputeoa, though it is not known if they were full- or half-brothers.
