List of electoral wards in County Durham
Electoral divisions and wards in County Durham (short guide)
This article gives a concise overview of how County Durham is divided for elections. Since the Local Government Act 1972, the area has seen several reorganisations, leading to different sets of electoral divisions for the county council and wards for district and unitary authorities. The numbers in brackets indicate how many councillors each division or ward elects.
Electoral divisions (county council)
- The county’s electoral divisions have changed at key points: 1 April 1974 to 7 May 1981; 7 May 1981 to 5 May 2005; 5 May 2005 to 2 May 2013; and 2 May 2013 to the present. In 2008 every division began electing two councillors.
Wards (district/unitary)
- Wards have followed four main periods: 1 April 1974 to 3 May 1979; 3 May 1979 to 1 May 2003; 1 May 2003 to 7 May 2015; and 7 May 2015 to the present. In 2009 the district councils were replaced by a single Durham County Council, so the ward structure changed accordingly.
