Silchar Airport
Silchar Airport (IATA: IXS, ICAO: VEKU) is a domestic airport serving Silchar, Assam, India. It is located at Kumbhirgram, about 29 km from Silchar city centre, on the foothills of the Barail Range. Built by the British in 1944 as RAF Kumbhirgram, it later came under the Royal Indian Air Force. On 1 June 1944, No. 81 Squadron RAF was stationed there. Today, the airport operates as a civil enclave under the Indian Air Force and is jointly managed by the Indian Air Force and the Airports Authority of India.
Silchar Airport is the fourth-busiest in northeast India after Guwahati, Agartala, and Imphal. Passenger numbers rose sharply in the late 2010s, with about 366,955 passengers in 2017-18, 386,665 in 2018-19, and over 412,600 in 2023-24. It ranks as the 45th busiest airport in India by passengers, 47th by aircraft movements, and around 46th in cargo.
The terminal handles domestic flights only. Runway 06/24 is 2,286 meters (7,500 feet) long with an asphalt surface and can accommodate aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. The airport features navigation aids including PAPI and ILS with a glide slope to assist landings. Elevation is about 107 meters (352 feet), and the airport covers roughly 36.7 acres. There is one domestic terminal with four check-in counters and four boarding gates, handling up to about 300 passengers at a time. Amenities include a restaurant, handicrafts shop, ATMs, a chocolates shop, and free WiFi. Indian Oil provides aviation fuel.
Ground transportation includes Volvo buses operated by Assam State Transport Corporation from Rangirkhari Point and the Inter-State Bus Terminus, with taxis available to nearby towns such as Hailakandi and Karimganj.
