Banks in Iceland: a quick guide

In Iceland, three big banks handle most everyday banking:

1) Landsbankinn: Mostly state-owned and one of the largest banks. It offers accounts, loans, mortgages, and online banking for people and businesses.

2) Arion Banki: A large private bank with services for individuals and companies, including loans and investment options.

3) Íslandsbanki: Another major bank providing retail and corporate banking, online services, and loans.

There are smaller banks and savings banks as well, but these three are the main ones most people use.

How banking works in Iceland: Banks offer online banking, debit and credit cards, loans, and mortgages. The country is regulated by the Central Bank of Iceland and the Financial Supervisory Authority to keep money safe. The Icelandic currency is the króna (ISK). Card payments are common, and cash is less often used.
