List of United States Congresses
This article lists every United States Congress since 1789, including when each one started and ended and the dates of its sessions. Each Congress has two chambers—the Senate and the House of Representatives—and lasts two years. It begins on January 3 of odd-numbered years. Before the 20th Amendment, ratified in 1933, Congresses started on March 3 or March 4 and ended around March 3, with presidential inaugurations on March 4. The 20th Amendment moved these dates so that Congresses begin on January 3 and presidents are inaugurated on January 20.
