Drummond Street is a short street just north of central London, close to Euston Station. It runs parallel to Euston Road and is famous for Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants and supply shops.
History and landmarks
- The street used to be longer and extended northeast through what is now Euston and Doric Way. The eastern part was rebuilt when Euston Station was expanded in 1961, and the Euston Arch was demolished.
- Part of Drummond Street became Doric Way, and the street was separated from Drummond Crescent to the north.
- Schafer House, a student hall for University College London, is located on Drummond Street.
- The Crown and Anchor pub at 137 Drummond Street is a Grade II listed building.
What’s on the street
- It’s best known for Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants and supply shops.
- The Diwana Bhel Poori House, opened in 1970, is a famous South Indian vegetarian restaurant and is widely described as Britain’s oldest such restaurant.
Recent changes and future
- Since 2019, the eastern end has undergone major demolition to make way for the High Speed 2 rail project.
- The original Euston tube station building at the corner of Melton Street may be demolished as part of the same works.
Revival efforts
- In June 2021, Camden Council and the local Business Improvement District launched the Drummond Streatery project to help revive the street’s restaurant trade after COVID-19 and the station works.
