St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Loxton
St Peter’s Lutheran Church, Loxton, is a Lutheran church in Loxton, South Australia. It is part of the Lutheran Church of Australia and is a heritage-listed building. The church sits on Bookpurnong Terrace, overlooking the Murray River.
The Loxton Lutheran congregation began in 1897, before the town was surveyed. Early worship took place in settlers’ homes and was led by Rev. L. Kuss from Mannum. In 1904, the first dedicated church building was erected—a simple stone hall about 40 by 20 feet, seating around 150. That building is now St Petri Hall. A manse was added in 1910, and the parish grew to include nearby areas such as Bookpurnong and Paringa.
In the early 1920s, with more than 300 members, the decision was made to build a larger church. Construction began in 1924. The foundation stone was laid on 18 January 1925 with the inscription “To the Glory of God – 1 Cor 3:11.” The church was dedicated on 7 March 1926, with about 2,000 people attending. J. B. Traeger of Nuriootpa was the contractor, local limestone came from R. E. Thiele’s property, and the pews and pulpit were designed by Cowell & Cowell and made from blackwood and other local timbers. The building was designed by Cowell & Cowell in the Early English Gothic style.
Inside, the church features a blackwood pulpit and pews, with timberwork by the architects. The tower is a prominent Loxton landmark.
St Peter’s is part of the Lutheran Church of Australia, teaching salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture, and the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Regular worship includes an 8:30am traditional service and a 10:30am informal service each Sunday. On the first Sunday of each month, the 10:30am service is followed by a community lunch.
The church is active in the community with groups, hospitality events, and outreach. It uses Peace Hall and St Petri Hall for social and ministry activities. St Peter’s Church and Hall on Bookpurnong Terrace are heritage-listed for their history and architecture.
