List of Buffalo Bills head coaches
The Buffalo Bills are an NFL team from Buffalo, New York. They began in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) and joined the NFL in 1970 after the AFL–NFL merger. The Bills have had 21 head coaches.
Their first head coach was Buster Ramsey (1960–1961). He was fired after the 1961 season.
Marv Levy is the Bills’ longest-tenured coach, serving 12 seasons and directing 182 games—the most in franchise history. He led the team to four straight AFC Championship Games from 1990 to 1993 but did not win a Super Bowl.
Lou Saban coached the team in the mid-1960s and won AFL championships in 1964 and 1965. Saban, Levy, and Chuck Knox have been named Coach of the Year by major outlets. Levy and Jim Ringo are the Bills’ Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees.
There have been six interim head coaches in Bills history. Joe Collier was fired in 1968 and replaced by Harvey Johnson. In 1976, Saban resigned and Jim Ringo served as interim, a role he also filled in 1977. Kay Stephenson was fired in 1985 and Hank Bullough served as interim before Levy, who had previously coached the Kansas City Chiefs, took over and became the long-time Bills coach. Perry Fewell was interim in 2009 after Dick Jauron was fired. In 2016, Anthony Lynn served as interim for the final game after Rex Ryan was fired.
After Levy, the Bills have had several full-time coaches, including Chan Gailey (2010–2012), Doug Marrone (2013–2014), Rex Ryan (2015–2016), and Sean McDermott (2017–2025). Under McDermott, the team made the playoffs eight times. He was fired on January 19, 2026, after nine seasons. Joe Brady, the Bills’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons, was named the next head coach on January 27, 2026.
