It receives students from Central, Dalneigh, Bishop Eden's, St Joseph's and Merkinch primary schools, and sits west of the River Ness and Kenneth Street (A82). In 2005, it became one of Scotland’s first Schools of Ambition. The headteacher (Rector) is Vikki Forrester. It began as the Technical High School, focusing on vocational courses, and changed to Inverness High School in 1959. In 2008 a fire in the Assembly Hall caused a temporary closure.
