Lilian Handlin
Lilian Handlin (born Lilian Bombach) is an American historian. She studied at Queens College, City University of New York, earned a master’s degree from Brown University, and completed her Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where Yehoshua Arieli was her adviser. Her 1975 dissertation, “George Bancroft, Jacksonian reformer,” was about the American historian and diplomat George Bancroft. From 1970 to 1977 she was an associate professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She married historian Oscar Handlin in 1977; he died in 2011. Handlin published a biography of Bancroft in 1984. With her husband she co-authored a biography of Abraham Lincoln in 1980 and a four-volume series, Liberty in America: 1600 to the Present, which surveys American history.
