Li Fusheng
Li Fusheng (4 January 1953 – 2 December 2007) was a Chinese football goalkeeper. He played for the Chengdu Military Football Team and the Bayi Football Team and earned 119 appearances for China, the most by any Chinese goalkeeper.
Born in Ju County, Shandong, he moved to Dalian for sports training. After his father died, he worked in a petroleum factory to support his family. He joined Dalian’s youth team in 1972, then moved to the Chengdu senior team in 1973 and to Bayi in 1975.
Li became China’s first-choice goalkeeper and helped the national team finish third at the 1976 AFC Asian Cup. China narrowly failed to reach the 1982 World Cup after losing a playoff to New Zealand.
He retired from playing in 1984 and became a coach for Bayi, eventually leading the team and pushing for professional football in China. He later joined the Communist Party and studied at the Central Party School and the PLA National Defense University, becoming a Colonel. He worked at the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution as deputy director in charge of cultural relics.
In August 2007 he fell from a ladder, suffered serious head injuries, and died on 2 December 2007 in Beijing, aged 54.
