Afroz Ahmad

Afroz Ahmad is an Indian environmental scientist and former civil servant who has worked to integrate environmental protection with development in India. Born in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, he studied at Avadh University in Faizabad, Dresden University of Technology in Germany, and completed programs with UNEP/UNESCO-CIPSEM, United Nations University Leadership Academy, and the University of Jordan.

He began his career with the United Nations Environment Programme in Germany before joining the Indian government. He has served as Advisor to the Government of Maharashtra for Environment, Forests, and Human Rehabilitation, with the status of State Guest. On 5 December 2014, he was appointed Member (Environment & Rehabilitation) of the Narmada Control Authority under the Ministry of Water Resources. He had previously been Director (Impact Assessment & Rehabilitation) at the Narmada Control Authority and has also worked with the G. B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development.

Afroz Ahmad is presently a member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), India’s apex body for environmental matters. He is married to Begum Sadiya Yasmin (Afroz), daughter of poet Bekal Utsahi; Sadiya is a poet and social worker. They have two sons, Dr. Mohamid Afroz Khan and Samman Afroz Khan.

Notable works by Afroz Ahmad include the application of environmental impact assessment in the Himalayas, major water resources projects in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Central India, and policy planning related to the rehabilitation of people displaced by large water projects on the Narmada River.

He has authored over 100 research papers, articles, and reports on environmental management, sustainable development, policy planning, and human rehabilitation, including three papers published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
