Letting the Cables Sleep
Letting the Cables Sleep is a soft rock song by Bush, released January 18, 2000 as the second single from their 1999 album The Science of Things. The song runs about 4 and a half minutes (4:36 album version; 4:33 single; 4:30 edit). It was written by Gavin Rossdale and produced by Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley, and Rossdale.
Rossdale has said the song was written for a friend with HIV. It became a modest hit and helped the album reach platinum status. It did better than the previous single Warm Machine but not as well as The Chemicals Between Us.
The track appeared in Goal II: Living the Dream and on the TV shows ER, Charmed, and Cold Case.
The music video, directed by Joel Schumacher, shows Gavin meeting a mysterious woman, their intimate encounter, and the aftermath: he paints lyrics about silence on a wall, and she signs that she cannot hear him; a friend then escorts her away.
