Let's Keep It That Way
Let's Keep It That Way is the 14th studio album by Canadian singer Anne Murray. It was released in February 1978 and recorded at Eastern Sound in Toronto. The album, produced by Jim Ed Norman, mixes pop and country and runs 32 minutes and 48 seconds. In Canada, it topped both the country and pop charts. In the United States, it reached the top ten on the country chart and No. 12 on the pop chart, becoming Murray’s highest-charting album on the pop list. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Two singles were released. The first, a cover of the Everly Brothers’ Walk Right Back, reached No. 4 on the U.S. country charts. The second single, You Needed Me, became a major hit, reaching No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts (Murray’s only Hot 100 No. 1), No. 4 on the U.S. country charts, and No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. You Needed Me also topped the Canadian charts and won Anne Murray the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Vocal Performance.
The title track, Let’s Keep It That Way, is about a married woman having a one-night stand with a charming stranger. The song was later recorded by other artists, including Juice Newton (1979), Nancy Sinatra (1980), and Mac Davis (1980). The album cover features a photo taken by Murray’s then-husband, Bill Langstroth. The Globe and Mail noted that finding the right producer was important to support Murray’s voice, which blends pop and country.
