Lenapah, Oklahoma
Lenapah is a small farming town in north-central Nowata County, Oklahoma. It sits about 11 miles north of Nowata and 62 miles northeast of Tulsa. The name comes from Lenape, the Delaware Native American tribe. As of 2020, about 272 people live there, and the town covers roughly 0.41 square miles, all land.
Lenapah lies just west of U.S. Route 169, about 14 miles south of Coffeyville, Kansas, and 4.5 miles north of Delaware, Oklahoma. The Verdigris River is about six miles to the east.
The town grew around the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway, which built a depot there in 1889; a post office opened in 1890. The population rose from 154 in 1900 to 331 at statehood in 1907, peaking at 434 in 1920. Oil and natural gas were found nearby after the early 1900s, and gas was piped to Lenapah, but these resources did not lead to long-term growth.
