Laddie Bakelman
Ladislaus Edmund "Laddie" Bakelman (1900–1965) was a cricketer from Ceylon. A slow left-arm orthodox bowler, he could make the ball move in either direction, and he was known as one of the country’s top schoolboy bowlers at St. Benedict’s College in Colombo. He played club cricket for Bloomfield in Colombo and starred on Ceylon’s first tour of India in 1932–33, taking 35 wickets in five first-class matches at an average of 15.28. On the tour’s two victories—Ceylon’s first-ever first-class wins—he claimed 23 wickets for 202 runs, including 6/34 and 6/65 against Patiala, and 6/42 and 5/61 against Central Provinces and Berar. After his playing days, Bakelman became a prominent umpire and schools coach in Ceylon. He died in 1965 at the age of 64 or 65.
