Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Lactuca aculeata is a wild lettuce native to Anatolia, the Levant, Iraq and Iran. The plant is very prickly and is closely related to prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and cultivated lettuce (Lactuca sativa). It can cross-breed with these species, and it may have contributed genes to the cultivated lettuce gene pool.
