Labette County USD 506
Labette County USD 506 is a public K–12 school district based in Altamont, Kansas. It serves Altamont, Angola, Bartlett, Dennis, Edna, Labette, Mound Valley, parts of Parsons, and nearby rural areas. The district runs five rural elementary schools in Altamont, Edna, Bartlett, Mound Valley, and Meadow View (southwest of Parsons). Labette County High School (LCHS) is in Altamont and serves about 500 students in grades 9–12. The district was founded in 1895 and focuses on career, vocational, and technical training.
LCHS offers programs in agriculture with a school farm; automotive technology; building and trades; electronics; welding; family/career science; and business-technology. It runs a cafe in Altamont during the school year called the Grizzly Grind, managed by Business Classes with help from Culinary Arts. LCHS competes in Class 4A sports: football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf, baseball, softball, and track and field. The arts include theatre, choir, band, and visual arts. Clubs and activities include FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, SkillsUSA, ITS; plus math club, stage band, chess club, SADD, and FCA.
