Kyoei Toshi
Kyoei Toshi, known in English as City Shrouded in Shadow, is a 2017 survival game for PlayStation 4 made by Granzella and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Players try to escape Ichi City as giant monsters and mecha from popular kaiju and tokusatsu franchises like Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera, Patlabor, and Neon Genesis Evangelion fight around them. It’s a spiritual successor to Granzella’s Disaster Report series, with some cameos from that world.
In the game you pick one of two characters, Ken Misaki or Miharu Matsuhara (names may change), and try to survive 17 levels with your partner Yuki. A hitman pursues you as you learn more about Yuki and her connection to the giant shadows. Some giants are friendly, some are hostile, and some are neutral.
The shadows come from Ultraman, Gamera (Heisei trilogy), Godzilla, Patlabor, and Evangelion. The game was teased in 2015 and officially revealed that year, with a live stream preview in December 2015. A PlayStation Vita version was cancelled to focus on the PS4. Kazuma Kujo directed the game, with Takashi Watabe as producer for Bandai Namco. The theme song is “Shadow” by Mai Iida.
Kyoei Toshi released in Japan on October 19, 2017. It includes secret costumes from Ultraman, Evangelion, and Patlabor, plus outfits from the previous Disaster Report games. A preorder period (July 6 to November 15, 2017) added a secret mission where PlayStation mascots Toro and Kuro ask you to help finish Zettai Anzen Toshi 2.
A Welcome Price edition came out on February 29, 2019, priced at 3,800 yen. In its first week in Japan, it sold 48,935 copies and ranked second on the all-format chart. Famitsu gave it a total score of 31/40 (8/8/7/8).
