Kirsten Ulve
Kirsten Ulve (born October 17, 1967) is a graphic artist and illustrator based in New York City. She is best known for caricatures of famous people and editorial illustrations for major newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times. Ulve has also designed for other media, such as Broadway marquees and United States Postal Service stamps. She grew up in Dubuque, Iowa; her mother Charlotte Ulve taught at Loras College and was active in the arts, and her father Edward Ulve was a CPA. She studied drawing and graphic design at the University of Iowa, then spent six years in Chicago before moving to New York to focus on illustration full time. Her clients span print and media, including Vogue Japan, The Los Angeles Times, Politico, The New Yorker, Glamour, Fast Company, Hasbro, and Entertainment Weekly. In 2011 she created the Hasbro Littlest Pet Shop animated characters; in 2019 she showed fine art at INNSIDE New York NoMad; in 2020 she contributed to the USPS holiday stamps and made Game of Thrones characters in Skyrim for Ars Technica. Ulve is married to Clay Pigeon, a WFMU radio host. Critics have praised her bright, graphic style with a mix of retro and contemporary influences, and she frequently participates in the American Illustrator Annual.
