Kerry South (Dáil constituency)
Kerry South was a Dáil constituency in the southern part of County Kerry, Ireland. It existed from 1937 to 2016 and elected three TDs to Dáil Éireann (the Irish parliament) using proportional representation by the single transferable vote (PR-STV). The area included the Dingle and Iveragh peninsulas and towns such as Killarney, Dingle, Cahirciveen, Killorglin and Kenmare.
Creation and abolition:
- It was created by the Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935, when the old Kerry constituency was split into Kerry North and Kerry South.
- It was first used in the 1937 general election (the 9th Dáil).
- It was abolished in the 2016 general election and replaced by the new Kerry constituency.
notable by-elections:
- There were a few by-elections during its existence when a TD died or resigned.
- 1944: Donal O'Donoghue (Fianna Fáil) won after Fionán Lynch resigned.
- 1945: Honor Crowley (Fianna Fáil) won after Frederick Crowley died.
- 1966: John O'Leary (Fianna Fáil) won after Honor Crowley died.
