Karl the Viking is a British comic hero from Fleetway Publications. The story is set in the 11th century and follows Karl, a Saxon-born boy who is raised by the Viking leader Eingar the Manslayer after a brutal raid. Eingar spares Karl’s life and makes him his son, giving Karl a mix of Viking and Saxon blood. Karl grows into a mighty warrior who leads raids but learns to temper Viking harshness with compassion.

The strip began in Lion on 29 October 1960 as “The Sword of Eingar” and was later renamed “Karl the Viking.” It ran for four years, drawn by Don Lawrence and written by Ted Cowan, with Michael Moorcock joining for the final arc and Ted Drury briefly taking over scripting in 1963. The adventures also appeared in Lion Annuals in color.

When the weekly ended in 1964, the series was replaced by Maroc the Mighty. Karl the Viking was later reprinted in modified forms: as “Swords of the Sea Wolves” (retitled Rolf the Viking) from 1966 to 1967, and as “Erik the Viking” from 1969 to 1971. These reprints sometimes included new material, and a short new strip appeared in the 1968 Lion Annual.

Don Lawrence’s painted artwork helped make Karl the Viking a coveted collector’s item. In 2008 the complete run was collected in four hardback volumes, and in 2020 the full strips were released in two volumes as part of Rebellion’s Treasury of British Comics line. In 2018, the rights to Karl the Viking moved to Rebellion, who have kept the character in print.

Key stories follow Karl’s path to leadership after rivalries with Orlaf and Skurl. After a village elder arranges a hunt for Eingar’s legendary sword, Karl proves his worth, defeats the traitorous Skurl, and overcomes the cruel Saxon noble Gyrth. As chief, he leads with strength and mercy, guiding the Vikings to new adventures—like returning the Mesoaamerican boy-king Tihuana home—while facing foes such as Selgor (who impersonates Thor), Moru the Sorcerer’s army, the Kraken, and other threats across lands and seas. The series is known for its rich artwork and a fantasy mash-up of different eras.
