Junji Kunishige
Junji Kunishige (January 20, 1942 – December 14, 2013) was a Japanese scholar and translator of American literature. He was a repatriate from Manchukuo. He attended Kagawa Prefectural Takamatsu High School and graduated from Tokyo University in 1966 with a degree in English literature. He began a PhD at Tokyo University but gave it up in 1972. He taught at Chiba University (assistant professor from 1974) and then at Tokyo Metropolitan University (assistant professor from 1975). In 1986 he joined Tokyo University’s College of Liberal Arts as an assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 1992. He served as chairperson of the American Literature Society of Japan (1998–2000) and of the English Literary Society of Japan (1999–2001). He retired in 2001, becoming professor emeritus at Tokyo University and a professor at Tsurumi University, and retired again in 2012. He died in 2013 of liver cancer.
