Julien Libeer
Julien Libeer (born October 1987 in Kortrijk, Belgium) is a Belgian classical pianist and composer. He has won several awards for his music and often performs his own works around the world. He also hosts the Belgian TV show Studio Flagey Klassik, a program about classical music.
As a child, Libeer loved many kinds of classical music. He wanted to be a conductor after watching Leonard Bernstein, but later chose piano after discovering Dinu Lipatti.
Education and influences: He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels from 2005 to 2009, then trained in Paris with Jean Fassina at age 18. He worked closely with Maria João Pires at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, where he is an associate artist and has done chamber music with the Artemis Quartet. He has received guidance from renowned musicians such as Dmitri Bashkirov and Alfred Brendel.
Awards: Libeer won the Juventus Award for the most promising young European soloist in 2008 and was named Young Musician of the Year by the Belgian Music Press Association in 2010. He won the Klara award in 2013 and again in 2016. Since 2020, he has been a resident artist at Flagey in Brussels.
Performances and collaborations: He has played at major venues including Barbican Hall in London, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. His tours have taken him to Japan, Lebanon, Turkey, and the United States. He has performed with many orchestras, such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Brussels Philharmonic, Belgian National Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, and the New Japan Philharmonic, working with conductors like Trevor Pinnock and Joshua Weilerstein.
Recordings and partners: Libeer often collaborates with other top musicians. He has recorded two albums with the label Evil Penguin Classic and has released more with Harmonia Mundi, Alpha Classics, and La Dolce Volta (with Camille Thomas and Lorenzo Gatto). Notable projects include Bach–Bartók (2020) and Bach & beyond – A Well-Tempered Conversation (2022) for Harmonia Mundi, featuring inventive takes on the Well-Tempered Clavier.
Media and teaching work: He is a frequent guest on Belgian and international media. He produces and hosts Studio Flagey Klassiek on Canvas and started the Salon Libeer concert series in Bruges (2017–2021). Since February 2022, he has led the Dead or Alive lecture series with LUCA School of Arts and KU Leuven to explore changes in classical music.
Other projects: Libeer is the artistic director of the Singing Molenbeek project, which supports choir rehearsals in Brussels primary schools since 2014.
