Juan Gutiérrez (baseball)
Juan Carlos “JC” Gutiérrez Acosta (born July 14, 1983) is a Venezuelan former professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and San Francisco Giants. He batted and threw right-handed.
Gutiérrez signed with the Astros as an undrafted free agent in 2000 and worked his way through the minors, helping the Corpus Christi Hooks win the Texas League title in 2006. He made his MLB debut for Houston on August 19, 2007. In seven appearances (three starts) as a rookie, he went 1-1 with a 5.91 ERA.
On December 14, 2007, he was traded to the Diamondbacks in a deal for José Valverde. He spent 2008 in the minors and then became a regular reliever in 2009, recording nine saves. In 2010 he earned 15 saves. In 2011 he appeared in 20 games before undergoing Tommy John surgery, ending his season. Arizona released him in October 2011.
After that, Gutiérrez spent time in the Royals organization and later with the Angels. He joined the San Francisco Giants in 2014 and appeared in 61 games, posting a 3.96 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. His last MLB appearance was on September 26, 2014.
Later he played in the minor leagues for the Phillies and Nationals organizations and in the Mexican League before retiring from professional baseball.
Career MLB stats include a 7–17 win–loss record with a 4.49 ERA and 241 strikeouts.
