José Castro (baseball)
José Castro (born May 5, 1958) is a Cuban-American baseball coach. He was born in Havana, Cuba, and bats and throws right-handed. He defected to the United States with his family in 1965 and grew up in Florida. He attended Miami Jackson High School, where his jersey number 9 was retired.
Castro signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1977 and spent 14 years in the minor leagues, mostly at Triple-A, never reaching the majors. He then began a coaching career.
He has coached for several organizations. He led hitting programs for Edmonton Trappers in 2003 and Portland Beavers in 2005–2006. He joined the Seattle Mariners in 2007 as a roving minor league hitting instructor and became the Mariners' hitting coach in 2008. In 2009 he was named the Mariners' minor league hitting coordinator. In 2010 he briefly served as the interim manager of the Tacoma Rainiers before returning to coaching. He joined the Kansas City Royals in 2013 as an assistant minor league hitting coordinator.
In 2014 Castro worked for the Chicago Cubs as a quality assurance coach, and in 2015 he joined the Atlanta Braves as an assistant hitting coach. He stayed with the Braves through 2022 and was part of the team when they won the World Series in 2021. In 2023 he was hired by the Chicago White Sox as their hitting coach, but was not retained after the season.
Castro is married with two children and two grandchildren.
