Jordanhill School
Jordanhill School is in Jordanhill, Glasgow, Scotland. It teaches children from age 4 to 19 and runs both a primary and a secondary department. It is co-educational, non-denominational, and funded directly by the Scottish Government, so there are no local school fees.
History and site
The school began as Jordanhill College School, the demonstration school for Jordanhill College of Education, on the old Jordanhill Estate. The school opened in 1921 (the college was founded in 1920). Up to 1988 it was run by the college. In 1988 it became directly funded by the Scottish Government, and in 1989 the name was shortened from Jordanhill College School. In 1993 the college merged with the University of Strathclyde, making Jordanhill Campus home to the Education Faculty. The campus has been updated over the years, including the South Campus built in 2009 and other new facilities.
Today
The school has a North Campus and a South Campus connected by a walkway. The South Campus houses subjects such as art, mathematics, modern languages and social sciences. The school has four houses: Crawford, Montgomerie, Smith and St. John. It is well known for strong exam results in Scotland.
Motto and culture
The Latin motto is Ad summa nitor, meaning Strive for the Highest. The nearest railway station is Jordanhill. The school has hosted filming for Trainspotting and BBC dramas such as Shetland and Single Father. In 2015 the school faced criticism for denying a place to a child with complex additional support needs due to funding rules.
