John Vernon Rob
John Vernon Rob CMG (17 December 1915 – 7 March 1971) was a British diplomat and the first British High Commissioner to Singapore. He was born in Chertsey, Surrey, and studied at Hordle House School, Oundle School and St John's College, Cambridge. He joined the Consular Service in 1939, but in September 1940 he enlisted in the Scots Guards and was seriously wounded in Italy in 1945. After the war he returned to the Foreign Office, becoming deputy head of the News Department for three years, and later serving as a Counsellor in New Delhi and Warsaw. From 1960 to 1962 he was ambassador to the Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon and Congo. In 1965 he was appointed Deputy Commissioner in Singapore and became High Commissioner when Singapore gained independence. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1969 due to ill health and worked part-time as an adviser to the Foreign Office Research Department.
