Amritsar Junction railway station
Amritsar Junction railway station, code ASR, is in Amritsar, Punjab, India, on GT Road (Putlighar Road). It sits about 233 metres above sea level and is part of the Northern Railway zone, in the Firozpur Division of Indian Railways. Opened in 1862, it has grown to be the largest and busiest station in Punjab.
Lines and platforms
Amritsar Junction is a major hub on several routes: the Amritsar–Jammu main line, the Ambala–Attari line, the Amritsar–Pathankot line, the Amritsar–Dera Baba Nanak line, and the Amritsar–Khem Karan line. The station has 10 platforms (8 for regular trains, 1 for freight, and 1 for Military Forces and Parcel). There are 10 tracks. Platform 8 is used for freight, and Platform 1B is reserved for freight and Indian Army passenger trains.
Facilities and operations
The station is equipped with WiFi and CCTV. An Armed Forces Movement Control Office operates from Platform 1. Amritsar Junction is undergoing upgrades to handle more passengers and trains; platforms 6 and 7 were added in 2018, and escalators were planned for Platform 5. There is also discussion about expanding capacity further to better serve the city’s busy traffic.
Electrification and plans
The Phagwara–Jallandhar–Amritsar segment was electrified in 2003–04, and the Amritsar–Pathankot route is electrified as well. Electrification work is ongoing on the Amritsar–Khemkaran line. A new Patti–Ferozepur link could shorten distances to northern and western states and may support new express services. To reduce the load on Amritsar Jn, Bhagtanwala and Chheharta stations are being developed as satellites.
Other notes
Amritsar railway workshop maintains WDS-4 locomotives and bogies, contributing to the maintenance and operations of the broader railway network in the area.
