John Phillips (snooker player)
John Phillips (1935–2008) was a Scottish professional snooker player. He was born in Springburn, Scotland. In 1952 he defeated the reigning British youth champion Mark Wildman, but lost to Gary Owen in the second round. He won the Scottish amateur snooker championship six times: 1958, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1966 and 1971, and was runner-up in 1975. At the 1970 World Amateur Snooker Championship he won four of six round-robin matches but did not reach the knockout stage. While an amateur, he worked as a postman. He became a professional in 1981 with the WPBSA. In 1982 he lost 3–6 to Eddie Sinclair in the Scottish Professional Championship, and 3–9 to Paul Medati in World Championship qualifying. He withdrew from several events in 1982 and left the WPBSA in 1983. Phillips was known for his high-quality safety play. He died in 2008 aged 72.
