Mister Mosquito
Mister Mosquito is a stealth-style video game for PlayStation 2. You control Mister Mosquito, a tiny mosquito who has taken up residence in the Yamada family’s house. Your goal is to survive the summer by sucking blood from the family without being noticed.
How you play is simple but tense. Each family member can be fed on only from certain body parts at specific times. They follow looping patterns, so you must watch and follow them to fill your blood quota for each stage. If someone spots you or swats you, trouble follows. If you’re noticed while flying, you enter Battle Mode, a boss-style fight where you must calm the person down by hitting pressure points until they relax and return to their routine. If you’re careless, Mister Mosquito can die instantly.
The game is made up of stages that unlock in order, but you can choose your path within each stage. At the start of a stage you get a briefing that explains the room, who you’ll feed on, where on the body feeding is possible, and any hazards. The rooms are fully explorable and hide items that can help you.
Mister Mosquito was announced in 2001 and released in Japan on June 21, 2001. It came to North America and Europe in 2002 under the Fresh Games label. In Japan it’s known as Ka; in PAL regions it’s called Mr Moskeeto. On September 17, 2024, it was re-released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 via PlayStation Network with a lower ESRB rating of E10+.
A sequel, Ka 2: Let’s Go Hawaii, came out in 2003 in Japan. It keeps the basic play but adds new features like feeding from any body part, more advanced pressure points, and a relaxation system to calm attackers.
Mister Mosquito has left a quirky mark on gaming history. It sold about 160,000 copies in Japan by the end of 2001 and was noted by several outlets for its odd, memorable concept. The character Mister Mosquito also makes a cameo as an unlockable bot in Astro Bot.
