Jharkhand Day
Jharkhand Day is the state’s foundation day, celebrated every year on November 15. It marks the formation of Jharkhand in 2000, when the state was created from southern Bihar under the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000. The demand for a separate Jharkhand grew in the early 1900s from groups like the Jharkhand Party, who wanted recognition of the region’s distinct tribal and cultural identity. On November 15, 2000, the act took effect and Babulal Marandi became the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The date also coincides with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, a tribal freedom fighter.
Since 2021, November 15 is also observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (Tribal Pride Day) to honor Birsa Munda and tribal contributions to India's freedom struggle.
Celebrations include official ceremonies in Ranchi with parades, cultural events, and distribution of state awards. Across Jharkhand, schools, colleges, and civic organizations hold programs to mark the day, highlighting the state’s cultural heritage and tribal contributions.
