Mike Sorber is an American soccer coach and former midfielder. He was born on May 14, 1971, in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in Florissant, a suburb of St. Louis. His father, Pete Sorber, was a longtime college soccer coach who helped his son develop as a player. Sorber played high school soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy, winning state championships in 1985 and 1988.

College and early career
Sorber played for the Saint Louis University Billikens from 1989 to 1992. He helped the team reach the Final Four in 1991 and was a Hermann Trophy finalist in 1992. He finished his college career with 13 goals and 29 assists and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1994.

Professional playing career
After college, Sorber played two seasons in Mexico with UNAM (Pumas) from 1994 to 1996, making 51 appearances and scoring 1 goal. In 1996, he joined MLS, starting with the Kansas City Wizards (22 appearances, 4 goals). He was traded to the MetroStars in 1997, playing there until 1999 (74 appearances, 4 goals). In 2000, he joined the Chicago Fire for one season (19 appearances, 1 goal). In total, Sorber played 166 club games in his professional career, scoring 10 goals and adding several playoff assists.

International career
Sorber earned 67 caps with the United States from 1992 to 1998, scoring 2 goals. He played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the U.S. and was praised by coach Bora Milutinović as one of the team’s key players. His final international appearance came in a 1998 friendly against Paraguay. He was an alternate for the 1998 World Cup but did not make the final roster.

Coaching and later career
Sorber retired from playing in February 2001 and returned to Saint Louis University as an assistant coach. He later served as an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s national team from 2007 to 2011. In 2012, he joined the Montreal Impact as an assistant coach, but was not retained for the 2013 season. He then worked as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union in 2014. In 2017, he became Director of Soccer Operations and an assistant coach for Los Angeles FC, a role he held through 2021. He joined Toronto FC as an assistant coach and Technical Director in 2022 and remained there until 2023. From 2025 to 2026, he served as head coach of the St. Louis City SC Academy.
