Jessica Soho
Jessica Soho (Maria Jessica Aspiras Soho) is a Filipino broadcast journalist with GMA Network. She hosts the news magazine Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and was the main anchor of the news program State of the Nation on GMA News TV (now GTV) from 2011 to 2021. She is known for in-depth reporting and has earned many major awards throughout her career.
She was born on March 27, 1964, in San Fernando, La Union. Her family encouraged storytelling, and she has Cantonese roots through her grandfather. She studied mass communication at the University of the Philippines Diliman and joined GMA in January 1985. Her first report was about the inauguration of Manila Line 1, and she later covered defense and military stories.
Soho has received numerous honors, including the Fleet Street Award (1998) as the first Filipino recipient, and a Peabody Award in 1999 with the I-Witness team for the documentaries “Kidneys for Sale” and “Kamao.” She also won at the New York Film Festival (1991) for a hostage crisis story, the Ka Doroy Valencia Award, the ABU Grand Prize (1994), and the Asian Television Award (2001) for Best News/Current Affairs. In 2014, her programs Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and State of the Nation were recognized by the Peabody Awards for Typhoon Yolanda coverage, and she has been named one of the most trusted news presenters by Reader’s Digest Asia.
In 2015, she received an honorary doctorate in humanities from the University of Northeastern Philippines. Soho remains a prominent figure in Philippine journalism, known for her trusted reporting and popular interviews. She has also faced public moments, including a 2013 controversy with comedian Vice Ganda and a 2022 claim of bias from a political campaign, which GMA supporters say doesn’t reflect her long-standing reputation for balanced reporting.
Beyond news, she has been involved in various media projects and continued to influence Philippine journalism with landmark coverage and a strong commitment to truth-telling.
