Jerry Ujdur
Jerry Ujdur is a former American baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1980 to 1984. He was born on March 5, 1957, in Hermantown, Minnesota, and he throws and bats right-handed. Ujdur played college baseball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 1978 draft.
He began his pro career in the minors, starting with the Lakeland team in 1978, then playing for the Montgomery Rebels in 1979, and the Evansville Triplets in 1980. He reached the Tigers in August 1980, making his major league debut on August 17, 1980, and earned one win in nine games with a 7.59 ERA. In 1981 he appeared in four games for Detroit and spent most of the year in the minors with Evansville (7-10, 4.09 ERA in 25 starts).
In 1982 Ujdur became a regular starter for Detroit, going 10-10 with a 3.69 ERA and finishing second in the American League in hits allowed per nine innings (7.58). He was named the Tigers’ rookie pitcher of the year. After a difficult start to 1983, he spent much of the season in the minors. In 1984 he was released by the Tigers after spring training and signed with the Cleveland Indians. He started the year with the Maine Guides (14-8, 3.69) and was called up in September, going 1-2 with a 6.91 ERA in four games for Cleveland.
Ujdur was released by the Indians in March 1985 and retired from baseball. Over his MLB career, he had a win-loss record of 12-16, an earned run average of 4.78, and 118 strikeouts.
