Japanese submarine Yu 1002
Yu 1002 was a Japanese Army transport submarine of the Yu I type, in the Yu 1001 subclass. Built by Japan Steel Works in Hiroshima, it went into service late in World War II to help supply isolated island garrisons around the Japanese homeland.
Design and capabilities: Yu 1002 was about 41.4 meters long with a beam of 3.9 meters and a draft of 3.0 meters. It displaced 274 tons when surfaced and 346 tons submerged. It used two Hesselman engines for surface running (with 298 kW) and a single shaft, plus a small propulsion system for submerged travel (56 kW). The submarine could reach about 10 knots on the surface and 4 knots underwater. Its range was around 1,500 nautical miles at 8 knots when surfaced, or 32 nautical miles at 4 knots submerged. Test depth was 100 meters. It could carry 24 tons of freight or up to 40 troops, had a crew of 23, and was armed with one 37 mm gun and two 13 mm anti-aircraft guns.
Operational history: Yu 1002 operated in Japanese home waters. From January 1945, some Yu I transports started missions from Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula, and Yu 1002 began transport runs from Shimoda in March 1945. It was part of Detachment 2, Transport Submarine Group, from February 11, 1945, and completed at least one round-trip shipment from Shimoda to Hachijō-jima.
End of the war and fate: The war ended on August 15, 1945. Yu 1002 surrendered to the Allies later that month and was subsequently scuttled or scrapped.
