Jana: Marked for Life is a Swedish crime drama and thriller about Jana Berzelius, a young public prosecutor in Norrköping who discovers her past as a child who was trafficked connects to a series of murders. The six-part series is based on Emelie Schepp’s novel Märkta för livet and was created by Felix Herngren and Henrik Björn. Madeleine Martin stars as Jana, with Pernilla August and Johan Ulveson as her adoptive parents, and August Wittgenstein as lead prosecutor Peer.

Plot in brief: After Jana’s retirement-party-turned-concern reveals a murdered immigrant child, she learns a mysterious scar on a victim’s neck relates to the Thanatos symbol, while she herself carries a similar mark. This pulls her into a bigger case with Peer, police officers Mia and Henrik, and others. As the investigation uncovers a trafficking network and a warehouse full of skeletons from the 1990s, Jana realizes her own childhood was tied to these crimes. She faces danger from former child-soldiers, including Hades and Phobos, and a trainer named Baba. Jana also takes in her adopted sister Jojo. She eventually rescues Victoria (who is renamed Lyssa), but Baba is killed and the network remains partly uncovered with some fugitives on the run.

Production and release: The show was filmed in early 2023 in Norrköping and Stockholm, produced by Viaplay and FLX. It was originally set to stream in Europe in late 2023 but was delayed; Prime Video Nordics later picked it up. Jana: Marked for Life premiered on SBS On Demand in Australia on March 6, 2024, and began streaming on Prime Video in Europe on April 19, 2024. BBC iPlayer acquired the series in April 2024, and it aired on BBC Four in the UK on June 8, 2024.
