James Cobbett
James Cobbett (12 January 1804 – 31 March 1842) was an English professional cricketer. Born in Frimley, Surrey, he died in Marylebone, London. He played from 1826 to 1841 for Middlesex, Surrey, and the Sheffield Cricket Club. Known as the finest all-rounder of his day by The Cricketer and Wisden, Cobbett was a right-handed batsman, occasional wicketkeeper, and right-arm slow roundarm bowler. He started as a bowler on the MCC ground staff and sometimes served as an umpire. His first-class career began with Middlesex in 1826; Surrey rarely played cricket then, and he appeared once for Surrey in 1839 and played for Yorkshire in 1835. He also represented the Players in the Gentlemen v Players matches and the South in the North v South series. Most of his appearances were for MCC between 1830 and 1841: 47 matches, 78 runs, and 311 wickets.
