Jørgen Hansen (boxer)
Jørgen Gamle Hansen, nicknamed "Gamle" (The Old One), was a Danish welterweight boxer born on 27 March 1943 in Aarhus, Denmark. He competed for Denmark at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the welterweight division but lost his first match. He turned professional after the Olympics and boxed until 1982, finishing with a record of 78 wins (34 by knockout) and 14 losses in 92 fights.
Hansen fought for the WBC world light-welterweight title in 1973 but was stopped by Italian Bruno Arcari. He became European welterweight champion three times. His first European title came in 1977 against Marco Scano, but he lost the title by disqualification in his first defense. In 1978 he beat Alain Marion to reclaim the European title, but he later lost it again by disqualification. He won the European title for the third time by knocking out British champion Dave Boy Green in the third round and defended it six times before giving up the title at the end of 1981. His last fight was in December 1982, a decision win over former world champion Perico Fernandez. Hansen died on 15 March 2018 at the age of 74.
His life inspired the 2017 Danish film Den Bedste Mand (Pound for Pound), which is based on Hansen’s life and that of his friend Ayub Kalule.
