Volvo FH
The Volvo FH is Volvo Trucks’ flagship heavy‑duty truck family. It first appeared in 1993 as the FH12 and FH16, with FH standing for Forward control High entry. The line became one of the best‑selling trucks in the world, with more than 400,000 sold.
Design and technology
When the FH launched, it introduced a new 12‑litre inline‑six engine with advanced fuel and valve systems, plus a redesigned, more aerodynamic cab. The goal was better comfort, lower weight, and improved fuel efficiency. In 1995 the FH became one of the first heavy trucks to offer an SRS airbag for added safety. The cab was developed to pass tough crash tests and to be quieter and more comfortable for long hauls. An early emphasis on electronics laid the groundwork for later networked systems that let different control units communicate for better performance and diagnostics.
Generations, engines and transmissions
A major update arrived in 2001 with a second generation FH and FM, bringing a redesigned cab, improved aerodynamics, a new automatic gearshift (I‑Shift), and upgraded electronics. The first of Volvo’s new 16‑litre engines (the D16 series) appeared with higher power than before, along with more efficient drivetrains. The 13‑litre line (D13) followed in the mid‑2000s, along with options for higher power and emissions controls. In 2008, Volvo introduced a high‑output FH16 model that offered up to 700 horsepower, as part of ongoing Euro IV/V updates. Throughout these years, Volvo expanded automatic and automated manual transmission options (including I‑Shift) and added driver‑assist features.
Euro VI, naming changes and new tech
In 2012 Volvo relaunched the FH with major technology upgrades and a new design, introducing the Euro VI engines and the D13K 13‑litre option. The model name shifted toward FH13 for the 13‑litre variants. New driveline technologies, such as I‑Torque and I‑See fuel‑saving features, helped improve efficiency. Volvo also expanded safety and driver aids, including radar‑controlled cruise control, Lane Keeping and Lane Change Support, and the Driver Alert System.
Recent updates and variants
A facelift in 2020 refreshed the FH with a bolder look, new headlights, updated interior, enhanced safety features, and efficiency improvements. Volvo also introduced its autonomous emergency braking system to help prevent collisions. The FH family continued to evolve with the 2020s, and in 2021 Volvo launched an electric FH version for zero‑emission trucking.
The latest in 2024
The 2024 update brought a new D17 engine to replace the D16K, offering three power outputs: 600 PS, 700 PS, and 780 PS, with up to 3,000–3,800 Nm of torque. The FH Aero variant was introduced with an extended, more streamlined cab, digital mirrors, and improved aerodynamics. The FH Aero line is joined by four variants: FH Aero, FH Aero Electric, FH Aero gas‑powered, and FH16 Aero. The upgraded family also features newer safety and infotainment systems, enhanced I‑See efficiency, and the option of the Volvo Camera Monitoring System.
Other notes
The FH has been produced in multiple plants around the world and has seen continual updates to meet evolving emissions standards, safety requirements, and customer needs for long‑haul, heavy‑duty trucking. The line remains a central part of Volvo Trucks’ offerings for demanding transport tasks.
