Iraqi Turkmen Islamic Union
Iraqi Turkmen Islamic Union (Arabic: الاتحاد الإسلامي لتركمان العراق; Turkish: Irak Türkmen İslam Birliği) is a Shia Islamist political party for Iraqi Turkmen. It is led by Secretary-General Abbas al-Bayati, with Jasim Mohammed Jaafar as deputy. The party was founded in 1991 during the Iraqi uprisings and aims to defend Iraqi Turkmen interests, working with other Kurdish and Shia Arab groups. In the 2005 elections, it joined the United Iraqi Alliance with other Shiite parties. Its deputy leader, Jasim Mohammed Jaafar, later served as Minister of Housing and Construction in 2005 and Minister of Youth and Sports in 2006 under Nouri al-Maliki. The party currently has zero seats in the national Council of Representatives and in local governorate councils.
