Ip Man 2
Ip Man 2 is a 2010 Hong Kong martial arts film and the sequel to Ip Man. Donnie Yen returns as Ip Man, the Wing Chun grandmaster. Set in 1949, Ip moves his family to British Hong Kong and tries to open a Wing Chun school, but he struggles to attract students and gain respect.
A rival Hung Ga master, Hung Chun-nam, and a corrupt British officer threaten Chinese martial arts. Ip refuses to pay protection money, and tensions rise. After a street brawl and a tough test of skill, Ip earns the right to teach, but new challenges keep coming.
At a big martial arts exhibition, a Western boxing champion, Taylor “The Twister” Miller, insults the Chinese fighters. Hung challenges Twister, but the match ends badly for Hung. Ip then faces Twister himself. The fight rules ban kicking, so Ip Uses Wing Chun to adapt and eventually defeats Twister. The corrupt officer is exposed, and Ip delivers a message about respect and unity among people of all backgrounds.
The film also features a brief appearance by a young Bruce Lee as Ip’s future pupil. The cast includes Donnie Yen as Ip Man, Sammo Hung as Hung Chun-nam, Huang Xiaoming as Wong Leung, and Lynn Hung as Ip’s wife. Production took place mainly in Shanghai in 2009, with Sammo Hung directing the fight choreography.
Ip Man 2 was released in Hong Kong on April 29, 2010, and in the United States in January 2011. It was well received for its story and fight scenes, and it earned about US$49 million worldwide. The ending hints at Ip’s ongoing influence and his connection to Bruce Lee.
