Interim Government of Iran (1981) was a temporary cabinet led by Prime Minister Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani. It lasted from 2 September 1981 until 29 October 1981, during the transition after the August 30 assassinations of President Mohammad-Ali Rajai and Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar. Ruhollah Khomeini was the head of state. A Provisional Presidential Council proposed Kani to the Majlis, which approved him on 2 September and his cabinet on 3 September. The main job of this government was to organize presidential elections. Ali Khamenei became president on 13 October. On 29 October, Mir-Hossein Mousavi was approved as prime minister after the Majlis rejected Khamenei's first candidate, Ali Akbar Velayati, and Mousavi formed the next government, replacing Mahdavi-Kani's interim administration.
