Inter-American Convention Against Corruption (IACAC)

- The treaty was adopted by the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) on March 29, 1996, in Caracas, Venezuela.
- It entered into force on March 6, 1997.
- It was the first international treaty focused specifically on fighting corruption.
- The convention has two main goals:
1) Help each participating country develop and strengthen mechanisms to prevent, detect, punish, and eradicate corruption.
2) Promote cooperation among the states to make anti-corruption measures effective in public functions and related acts of corruption.
- It involves 34 parties, and the General Secretariat of the OAS acts as the depositary.
- Official languages are English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
