Cadiz Dunes Wilderness
Cadiz Dunes Wilderness is a protected area in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California. It is part of the Mojave Trails National Monument and was established in 1994 by Congress; the U.S. Bureau of Land Management oversees it. The wilderness covers about 19,935 acres (81 square kilometers) and is classified as IUCN Category Ib. It is north of Joshua Tree National Park, with the Sheephole Valley Wilderness to the west and the Old Woman Mountains Wilderness to the east. The dunes were created by wind-blown sand from the Cadiz dry lake, in the Cadiz Valley between the Calumet Mountains and the Old Woman Mountains. The Mojave Desert habitat hosts animals such as coyotes, black-tailed jackrabbits, ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, quail, roadrunners, and rattlesnakes, and spring wildflowers like Borrego milkvetch brighten the area. The nearest town is Amboy, California.
