Institute of Engineering
The Institute of Engineering (IOE) is Nepal’s leading technical institute under Tribhuvan University. It was established in 1972 when two older institutes were merged to form one campus system. The IOE offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs; diploma courses were offered until 2012. It has five main campuses – Pulchowk, Thapathali, Paschimanchal (Pokhara), Purbanchal (Dharan), and Chitwan Engineering Campus (Rampur, Chitwan) – plus ten affiliated campuses.
A brief history
- 1930: A Technical Training School began in Kathmandu.
- 1959: The Nepal Engineering Institute was established with government support.
- 1965: The Technical Training Institute started in Thapathali.
- 1972: The Nepal Engineering Institute and the Technical Training Institute were merged under Tribhuvan University to form IOE; the former institutes became Pulchowk Campus and Thapathali Campus.
- Later, Paschimanchal Campus in Pokhara opened in 1987, Purwanchal Campus in Dharan in 1984, and Chitwan Engineering Campus in Rampur in 2019 (offering Architecture).
Admissions
IOE conducts entrance exams every year for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Competition is very high. Pulchowk Campus is the most sought after, followed by Thapathali Campus. About a fraction of applicants win seats: Pulchowk accepts a few hundred students from thousands of applicants, and Thapathali accepts a smaller number. Overall, only a small percentage of applicants are admitted.
