Infomaniak
Infomaniak is a Swiss technology company that focuses on sustainable and privacy‑friendly online services. It is Switzerland’s largest cloud computing company and offers cloud storage, webmail, web hosting, and domain registration through its kSuite tools.
Origins and growth
- Started as a user group in 1990 in Geneva, founded by Boris Siegenthaler.
- In 1994, they opened the Siegenthlaer & Lucchi computer store in Chatelaine and became the canton’s first privately owned internet service provider (after CERN and the University of Geneva) by buying a modem and a 64 kbps line.
- From 1995, they offered free internet access to customers who bought a computer.
- May 1997: became a full ISP with TWS Infomaniak SA, focusing on low-cost internet, web hosting, and computer equipment.
- 1999: TWS Infomaniak became Infomaniak Network, expanding into web hosting for private users and small/medium businesses; launched the Swiss web radio basic.ch.
- 2003: largest web host in Western Switzerland; July 2005: largest web-radio broadcaster in Western Switzerland and France.
Sustainability and services
- 2007: sustainability charter created—ethical pension fund, sustainable travel, and donating 1% of annual revenue to NGOs.
- 2010: created Infomaniak Entertainment for ticketing, staff, and accreditation management.
- Primary business remains web hosting and domain registration.
Milestones
- 2011: managed more than 100,000 domain names.
- 2014: opened a third data center that runs on 100% renewable energy with a very low PUE; won the Geneva sustainability prize.
- 2015: switched to SSD storage.
- 2016: over 200,000 domain names, 150,000 sites, and 350 radio/TV stations; adopted Let's Encrypt SSL certificates early.
- About 70% of customers are businesses, 30% individuals; roughly 30% of customers come from France and Belgium; ~60 employees.
Controversy
- Founder Boris Siegenthaler caused debate with a LinkedIn post opposing online anonymity and privacy services; Infomaniak’s communications team defended privacy advocates while noting that justice may require information in some cases.
