India–Nauru relations

India and Nauru have had diplomatic ties since Nauru’s independence in 1968. Both are republics in the Commonwealth.

Key points of cooperation

- Economy and business: In 1981, Paradeep Phosphates Ltd became a joint venture between India and Nauru. In 1993, Nauru pulled out its investment after losses; India bought back Nauru’s stake equal to its initial investment.

- High-level visits: In 1993, President Bernard Dowiyogo visited India. In 1998, President Kinza Clodumar visited India for a Global Environment Facility meeting and stayed as a state guest for two days.

- Development aid and education: India has supported Nauru’s education and infrastructure, helping with student transport, hiring more teachers, and upgrading Parliament facilities with better transport and computer links. In 2003, Nauru requested expert help in computer work, phosphate mining, power generation, and desalination.

- Training and scholarships: In 2010–11, India allocated five IT training slots to Nauru under the ITEC program and offered one ICCR Commonwealth scholarship slot.

- Security and policing: During celebrations of Nauru’s constitution day, India supplied police uniforms and provided 22 SUVs and 2 buses.

- Diplomatic presence: India is a Dialogue Partner for the Pacific Islands Forum; the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji is also accredited to Nauru, and Nauru has an Honorary Consul General in New Delhi.

- Recent engagement: In December 2022, Indian Deputy Minister of External Affairs RK Ranjan met Nauru’s President Rus Josheph Kun.

- Summit and future cooperation: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a 14-nation India–Pacific Island Countries Forum Summit in Suva, Fiji, with a Nauruan delegation. India pledged to open a trade office in New Delhi, help build a pan-Pacific telecommunication network, increase grant aid to $200,000 annually for the region, and offer on-arrival visas for Nauruan citizens.
