Petr Pavel was sworn in as the Czech Republic’s fourth president on March 9, 2023, during a joint session of Parliament in Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle. This was the seventh presidential inauguration since the country became independent. Pavel won the presidency in the 2023 election, defeating Andrej Babiš with about 58% of the vote in the runoff.

The ceremony was organized by the Office of the President, the Office of the Chamber of Deputies, and Pavel’s team, led by Jana Vohralíková. About 850 guests attended, including members of Parliament, government officials, former presidents and their spouses, the President of the Constitutional Court, judges, academics, the Army and security services, diplomats, Pavel’s family, and others invited by him. Foreign heads of state were planned to attend but did not.

The oath was administered by Prime Minister Petr Fiala. After taking the oath, Pavel gave a speech from the balcony of the castle’s third courtyard.
