Illicium henryi, also called the Henry anise tree or Chinese anise tree, is a shrub or small tree in the Illicium genus. It is a broad-leaved evergreen plant that grows about 1.8 to 7 meters tall. Its leaves are simple, glossy dark green on top and paler underneath, and they smell strong when crushed. It is native to China, especially in the north-central, south-central, and southeastern regions. The name Illicium comes from Latin for "seductive," referring to its fragrance. The species name henryi honors Augustine Henry, an Irish botanist who explored China and coauthored Trees of Great Britain and Ireland with Henry Elwes.
